At the end of 2023, I found myself in a place I didn’t expect: life felt hollow, social connections felt distant, and my everyday joy had vanished. I had everything I thought I wanted—a home filled with things I loved, a great job with bright colleagues, and supportive friends. But despite this, I felt lost. I wondered, How do I heal?
I decided to apply for a working holiday visa to Canada. With that, I began packing up my life—donating clothes, my coffee machine, kitchenware, and finally, renting out my home at an affordable rate to help someone in need. I took only two suitcases and set out.
Since arriving in Canada in late May, I’ve spent nearly six months building a new life. From starting with nothing, I’ve found a job I enjoy, supportive teammates, and a kind-hearted landlord couple who treat me like family. I’ve experienced the four seasons in a new way: watching bunnies cross my yard in spring, hiking and exploring parks in summer, and reveling in fall’s golden beauty, something I had only seen on TV. Now, as winter approaches and the first snow falls, I feel ready—even for the challenges of a long, cold season.
Here are the three things I’ve learned this year:
#1: Choose Your Lifestyle
We’re shaped by the values we’re raised with, but globalization gives us the chance to adopt the lifestyle that truly suits us. Finding what fits our personal rhythm and values is a powerful way to create a fulfilling life.
#2: Stop Overthinking
In Taipei’s fast-paced environment, I was constantly pushing myself—taking courses, networking, and endlessly seeking improvement. But this year, I’ve learned to slow down, focus, and let go of self-doubt. Now I work with curiosity and openness, asking questions, admitting mistakes, and learning from others. Being honest with myself, even when it means facing failure, has become my greatest strength.
#3: Embrace Meditation
I now practice yoga and meditation four times a week. I used to say, “I’m too busy,” but in truth, I wasn’t prioritizing my mental health. Yoga has helped me find stillness, a peaceful heart, and freedom from overthinking. I’ve learned to take in feedback without letting it define me—ultimately, only I know what truly matters to me.
This year has shown me the importance of courage, self-trust, and gratitude for all the people and opportunities that have come into my life. To everyone who has supported me, thank you. And to myself, thank you for being brave enough to build a better life.
